Vallecas is changing…

August 26, 2011

My beloved Vallecas neighborhood will never be the same.

You know what we have now? A small independent bookshop! Right in the middle of all the Chinese supermarkets and secondhand junk shops, a tiny bastion of gentrification. Just a few blocks from the dilapidated old casas bajas… And even fewer blocks from the methadone clinic!

Apparently, the neighborhood is being taken over by people who read. Books. You know who reads books? Elitists!

This shit is gonna have to stop. Next they’ll be putting in a Starbucks and a… well, we don’t really have anything equivalent to WholeFoods around here. So a Starbucks!

Damn yuppies.

P.S. See also: the death of typical Spanish bars and Gentrification in Madrid. Or (for much more about different neighborhoods) check out my articles about Clot up in Barcelona or La Latina in Madrid.

P.P.S. I started this blog back in 2010 on tumblr, and I guess over on tumblr it was okay to just write three paragraphs and call it a full blog post. A lot has changed, since 2010.

About the Author Daniel

How did I end up in Spain? Why am I still here almost 20 years later? Excellent questions. With no good answer... Anyway, at some point I became a blogger, bestselling author and contributor to Lonely Planet. So there's that. Drop me a line, I'm happy to hear from you.
