Conversation with my trilingual girlfriend

March 30, 2013

Things that happen when you’ve been living abroad way too long…

Girlfriend: Ahora que estamos de vacaciones, voy a aprovechar para hablarte en inglés.

Me: Okay. Let’s do it!

Girlfriend: No, ahora no! Empezaré después de la siesta. Ahora tengo demasiado sueño para hablar idiomas.

Me: Sure, whatever.

(Later, after our nap…)

Me: So, shall we speak English now?

Girlfriend: No, ¡ahora no! ¡Tengo el pelo sucio! ¿Cómo puedes pretender que yo hable el inglés en un momento como éste? ¡Tengo que ducharme primero!

Me: Okay, go for it.

(Later, after her shower…)

Me: Are you going to start speaking English now?

Girlfriend: No, ¡ahora no! Estoy digiriendo la cena todavía. Mañana por la mañana empiezo a hablar inglés.

Me: Okay, sure. We’ll speak English tomorrow.

(The next morning…)

Me: Good morning! Shall we speak English today?

Girlfriend: Yes.

Me: Okay.

Girlfriend: Yes.

Me: So…

Girlfriend: […]

Me: […]

Girlfriend: […]

Me: […]

Girlfriend: ¡No tengo nada que decir!

(End.)

P.S. I hope you enjoyed that. More brilliant conversations in English and Spanish: Conversation with an ESL student (one of my personal favorites), conversation with a hairstylist, and conversations in the language school #1, #2 and #3.

About the Author Daniel

How did I end up in Spain? Why am I still here almost 20 years later? Excellent questions. With no good answer... Anyway, at some point I became a blogger, bestselling author and contributor to Lonely Planet. So there's that. Drop me a line, I'm happy to hear from you.
